Frequently Asked Questions

Why a coop tour?

A group of Durham coop owners, the Bull City Chickens, want to share their enthusiasm for chicken raising and to demonstrate how rewarding it is as an earth-friendly, humane practice that supports living a sustainable lifestyle. Often, people involved in the urban chicken movement are novices in the agriculture field, and helping each other by words and deeds and spreading the gospel is in keeping with the spirit of what we do. Those of us with hens in the family want to show off the girls in their groovy homes and hope that this tour will inspire others interested in hens!

Coop Owners will demonstrate how it’s possible to keep the entire operation clean, free from unsanitary or unhealthy conditions, and how it is also kid-friendly and educational! Last but not least, the fresh eggs are INCREDIBLE!!

What part of Durham will the tour be in?

All of the coops on the Tour will be within the city limits.

How does the Tour work?

Do I have to visit the coops in a particular order?

No. You do not have to visit the coops in any particular order. All the coops on the tour will be open for visitors between 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m on Saturday, October 18th.

Once you get your map you can decide which coops you would like to visit.

I’ve got the map but I don’t quite understand which house I am going to?

Each coop that will be on the tour will have a sign placed in their yard to help you know that you’re in the right place. Each coop owner determines how they want “traffic” to flow that day and will have our official “Bull City Coop Tour” sign staked out in their yards to show you where to go. Just look for the chicken signs and the people gathering around! You can’t miss it!

Will the Tour be rescheduled if it rains?

No. The tour will go on rain or shine. Our hens live out in their coops full time and through all types of weather. Bring an umbrella and your rain boots.

If it rains please be kind to the egos of our wet and muddy girls.

Will there be any coops that are not listed on the map that will be on the tour?

No. Only the coops listed on the map will be on the tour. As we grow each year we will get new interest and new coops to keep things fresh and fun!

I have other questions. How can I contact Bull City Chickens?
